Example 1: Restaurant tip and split
Bill: ₹2,400. Tip: 10%. Split between 3 people. Tip = ₹240. Total = ₹2,640. Per person = ₹880.
Example 2: Shopping discount
Shirt original price: ₹1,800. Discount: 30% off. Savings = ₹540. Final price = ₹1,260.
Example 3: Adding 18% GST to a service invoice
Service charge: ₹5,000 (before tax). GST 18% = ₹900. Total invoice = ₹5,900.
Example 4: Extracting GST from an inclusive price
Restaurant bill: ₹1,180 (inclusive of 18% GST). Base = ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. GST = ₹180.
Tips & Common Mistakes
- Tip on pre-tax vs. post-tax amount: In India it is standard to tip on the total bill including GST. In the US, some tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator always tips on the bill amount you enter — enter the amount you want to tip on.
- Service charge vs. tip: Many Indian restaurants add a 5-10% service charge automatically. Check your bill — if service charge is already included, you do not need to add a separate tip.
- GST inclusive vs. exclusive: E-commerce sites often show prices inclusive of GST. If you need the base price for accounting, use the "Remove tax" option.
- Compound discounts: A "50% off + 20% additional" is not 70% off. It is 50% off first, then 20% off the reduced price = 60% total savings. Calculate each step separately.
Frequently Asked Questions — Tip & GST Calculator
Standard restaurant tips range from 10% to 20% depending on service quality and country. In India, 10% is common for good service. In the US, 15-20% is standard. For exceptional service, 20-25% is appropriate. Use this calculator to find the exact amount for any percentage.
Enter the total bill amount, set your desired tip percentage, and enter the number of people splitting. The calculator instantly shows how much each person owes including tip. For example, a ₹3,000 bill with 10% tip split between 4 people = ₹825 per person (₹3,300 total divided by 4).
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a value-added tax applied to most goods and services in India. Standard rates are 5% (essential goods), 12%, 18% (standard goods and services), and 28% (luxury items). Tax-exclusive: GST Amount = Base × Rate ÷ 100. Tax-inclusive: Base = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate).
To add 18% GST: GST Amount = Price × 0.18, Total = Price × 1.18. For example, on ₹1,000: GST = ₹180, Total = ₹1,180. To find the pre-GST price from an inclusive amount: Base = Total ÷ 1.18. So ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base price.
Discount Amount = Original Price × Discount% ÷ 100. Final Price = Original − Discount Amount. For example, 25% off ₹2,000: Discount = ₹500, Final Price = ₹1,500. Enter the original price and discount percentage above to see the savings instantly.
GST-exclusive (tax added): The listed price does not include tax. GST is added on top. E.g., ₹1,000 + 18% GST = ₹1,180 total. GST-inclusive (tax removed): The listed price already includes GST. Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate/100). E.g., ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% gives ₹1,000 base price.
First calculate GST on the pre-tax amount, then calculate tip on the post-tax total. In India, it is common to tip on the final bill including GST. Example: ₹1,000 base + 18% GST (₹180) = ₹1,180 bill; 10% tip on ₹1,180 = ₹118 tip; Grand total = ₹1,298. Use the two calculators in sequence for this workflow.
