What Is a Time Zone Converter?
A time zone converter lets you translate any date and time from one location's local time to another's. Because the world is divided into 24+ time zones — each offset from UTC by a whole or half-hour — a 9:00 AM meeting in New York happens at very different local times for participants in London, Dubai, or Tokyo.
This tool handles all conversions instantly using your browser's Intl API, which includes automatic daylight saving time (DST) adjustments for all supported time zones. You do not need to remember whether a country currently observes DST — the calculator does it for you.
How to Use This Converter
- Enter date and time: Click the date-time field and select the date and time you want to convert.
- Select "From" time zone: Choose the time zone the entered time belongs to (e.g., India/IST for an Indian time).
- Select "To" time zone: Choose the destination time zone (e.g., New York/EST to find the equivalent New York time).
- Read the result: The result box shows the converted time including the day if the conversion crosses midnight.
- World clock: Scroll down to the "Current Time in Major Cities" section to see live times across the globe updating every minute.
How Time Zone Conversion Works
Every time zone is defined by its offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). To convert between zones:
- Convert the source time to UTC: UTC = Source Time − Source UTC Offset
- Convert UTC to target: Target Time = UTC + Target UTC Offset
For example, converting 3:00 PM IST (UTC+5:30) to EST (UTC-5):
- UTC = 15:00 − 5:30 = 09:30 UTC
- EST = 09:30 − 5:00 = 04:30 AM EST
During US daylight saving (EDT, UTC-4) the result would be 05:30 AM EDT instead. The converter applies DST rules automatically.

Common Conversion Examples
IST to EST: Scheduling a US–India meeting
A 10:00 AM EST team call in New York is 8:30 PM IST in India (EST winter) or 7:30 PM IST during EDT summer. Early morning US calls fall in the India evening, which is generally workable for Indian participants.
IST to GMT: London overlap hours
India's best overlap with London is 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM IST (8:00 AM to 11:30 AM GMT winter). In UK summer (BST), the overlap is 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM IST aligning with 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM BST.
IST to SGT: India to Singapore
A 9:00 AM IST stand-up is 11:30 AM SGT — a comfortable overlap for both India and Singapore teams. Singapore is always 2.5 hours ahead of India with no DST changes.
Tips for Managing Multiple Time Zones
- Use UTC as a universal reference: When scheduling across many zones, share the time as UTC (e.g., "14:00 UTC") and let each participant convert locally.
- Watch out for DST switchover weeks: The US and Europe change clocks on different dates, causing the offset between them to shift for a week or two in spring and autumn.
- Half-hour and quarter-hour offsets: India (UTC+5:30), Iran (UTC+3:30), and Nepal (UTC+5:45) use non-whole-hour offsets — always use a converter for these.
- Date line crossings: Converting from late-evening Pacific time to Asian zones will push the date forward by one calendar day.
- IST never changes: India does not observe daylight saving time, so IST is always UTC+5:30 year-round.
Frequently Asked Questions — Time Zone Converter
India Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30) is 10 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC-5). When EST observes daylight saving (EDT, UTC-4) in summer, IST is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead. For example, 9:00 AM EST is 7:30 PM IST.
IST (UTC+5:30) is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT (UTC+0). Subtract 5 hours 30 minutes from IST to get GMT. For example, 12:00 PM IST = 6:30 AM GMT. In summer when the UK observes BST (UTC+1), IST is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead.
Singapore (SGT, UTC+8) is 2 hours 30 minutes ahead of India (IST, UTC+5:30). For example, 10:00 AM IST = 12:30 PM SGT. Singapore does not observe daylight saving time, so this difference is constant throughout the year.
IST (UTC+5:30) is 13 hours 30 minutes ahead of PST (UTC-8). During PDT (summer, UTC-7), the difference is 12 hours 30 minutes. For example, 8:00 AM PST is 9:30 PM IST on the same calendar day.
Daylight saving time (DST) shifts clocks forward by 1 hour in spring and back in autumn in countries like the USA, UK, and most of Europe. This means the offset between those zones and countries without DST (India, Japan, UAE) changes by 1 hour twice a year. This converter uses your browser's locale data to account for DST automatically.
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is essentially the same as UTC at UTC+0 and is used interchangeably in everyday contexts. Technically, UTC is based on atomic clocks while GMT is based on astronomical observations, but the difference is less than 1 second.
When it is 9:00 AM IST, it is 10:30 PM the previous day in New York during EST (UTC-5), or 11:30 PM during EDT (UTC-4) in summer. India is ahead of New York by 10.5 hours in winter and 9.5 hours in summer.
