What Is GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is the average of grade points earned in a single semester, weighted by the number of credits for each subject. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall average of all semester GPAs across your entire course.
In India, most universities use a 10-point CGPA scale where 10 is the highest grade. The US and many international universities use a 4-point scale where 4.0 represents the highest grade. Converting CGPA to percentage is essential for job applications, higher education admissions, and scholarship eligibility.

Worked Examples
Example 1 — CBSE CGPA: A student has 9.2 CGPA. Percentage (CBSE) = 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%.
Example 2 — Anna University: 8.0 CGPA. Percentage = (8.0 × 10) − 0.75 = 79.25%.
Example 3 — Semester GPA: Three subjects with grades O(10), A+(9), A(8) and credits 4, 3, 3. GPA = (10×4 + 9×3 + 8×3) / (4+3+3) = (40+27+24)/10 = 9.1.
Example 4 — Placement eligibility: A student with 7.8 CGPA is eligible for TCS (cutoff 6.0), Infosys (cutoff 6.5), and most campus placements. They also qualify for premium companies with 7.5+ cutoffs.
Tips for GPA Improvement
- High-credit subjects have more impact on GPA — prioritize them for better performance.
- A single F grade can significantly pull down your GPA due to 0 grade points.
- To improve CGPA, focus on subjects where you scored B or B+ — moving them to A+ gains more points than improving an already excellent grade.
- Many companies have a minimum CGPA cutoff of 6.0 or 6.5. Staying above 7.5 keeps all major campus placements accessible.
- Always check your university's specific CGPA-to-percentage formula before submitting applications — formulas differ between institutions.
- For US graduate school applications, convert your 10-point CGPA to the 4-point scale using the equivalency table provided by the target university.
