What Are Shoe Size Systems?

Shoe size systems vary significantly between countries, making international footwear shopping tricky without a converter. The three main systems are the US system (used in North America), the UK system (used in the UK and historically in much of the Commonwealth), and the European (EU or Paris Point) system used across continental Europe.

All systems ultimately measure foot length, but use different scales. The EU/Paris Point system is based on a unit of โ…” cm (6.67 mm), so each EU size increment corresponds to 6.67 mm of foot length. US and UK sizes use barleycorn increments (8.47 mm or 1/3 inch). This difference in base units is why conversion tables do not produce neat whole numbers.

Importantly, men's, women's and children's shoe sizes within the same country use different offsets, so a women's US 8 is not the same foot length as a men's US 8. Always specify gender when converting shoe sizes for accurate results.

How to Use This Shoe Size Converter

  1. Select your gender โ€” Choose Men, Women or Kids from the Gender dropdown. This adjusts the conversion formula for the correct scale.
  2. Choose your input system โ€” Select US, UK, EU, or CM (foot length) from the From dropdown.
  3. Enter your size โ€” Type your current shoe size. Half sizes are supported for US and UK โ€” enter 9.5 for example.
  4. Read the results โ€” US, UK, EU and foot length in cm all appear simultaneously in the result box.
  5. Measure your foot if you don't know your size โ€” place your foot on paper, trace it and measure heel-to-toe in centimetres, then enter as CM.

Shoe Size Conversion Formula

The conversion is based on foot length in centimetres. The EU size is calculated as: EU = foot_length_cm ร— 1.5 / 1.27 (approximately). The US men's size is: US men = (foot_length_cm โˆ’ 22.33) / 0.8467. For women, subtract 0.82 cm from the foot length before applying the formula.

Worked Examples

Example 1 โ€” US to EU (men): A man wears US size 10. Entering 10 in the converter (Men, From: US) returns UK 9.5, EU 44, foot length 27.3 cm. When ordering from a European brand, he would select EU 44.

Example 2 โ€” EU to US (women): A woman sees EU size 38 on a French website. Entering 38 (Women, From: EU) returns approximately US 7.5, UK 5.5, foot length 24.7 cm. This confirms she should order the EU 38.

Example 3 โ€” Foot measurement to size: A child's foot measures 22 cm. Entering 22 (Kids, From: CM) returns approximately US 5 (toddler), EU 34. This is the size to order, though it is always worth trying shoes on children since foot widths vary significantly.

Tips for Buying Shoes in the Right Size

  • Measure both feet โ€” most people have one foot slightly larger than the other. Always buy for the larger foot.
  • Measure in the afternoon โ€” feet swell slightly during the day. Afternoon measurements give the most realistic size for comfortable all-day wear.
  • EU sizes are consistent โ€” EU sizing varies less between brands than US or UK sizing. If in doubt, use the EU size as your reference.
  • Leave a thumb's width of space โ€” the front of the shoe should have about 1 cm (roughly a thumb's width) between your longest toe and the toe box for comfort.
  • Different brands run differently โ€” especially athletic footwear. Nike often runs half a size small; New Balance tends to run true to size. Check brand-specific reviews before ordering.
  • Kids' sizes change fast โ€” measure children's feet every 2โ€“3 months. A child who measured EU 30 in March may need EU 32 by September.
  • Width matters too โ€” many brands offer narrow (B/2A), standard (D/M), and wide (E/2E) widths. Standard conversion tables assume a medium width foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

For men, EU size is approximately US size + 33. For women, EU size is approximately US size + 31. For example, US men's size 9 is approximately EU 42, and US women's size 8 is approximately EU 39.

UK shoe sizes are typically 0.5 to 1 size smaller than US sizes for men, and 1.5 to 2 sizes smaller for women. For example, US men's size 10 is approximately UK 9.5, and US women's size 8 is approximately UK 6.

No โ€” the US, UK, European and Asian countries all use different sizing systems, and there can be slight variations between brands even within the same system. Always check the specific size chart for the brand you are buying.

D width is considered standard or medium width for men's shoes in the US system. For women, D is wide. Width sizing varies by brand and country, and not all international brands use the same width letter system.

No. US men's and women's shoe sizes use different scales. A women's US size 8 is approximately the same foot length as a men's US size 6.5. To convert, subtract approximately 1.5 from a women's size to get the equivalent men's size.

Children's shoe sizes in the US start at size 0 for newborns and go up to size 13, then restart at size 1 as 'big kids' or junior sizes. EU children's sizes run from about EU 16 for infants up to EU 38. Use the Kids category in the converter for accurate results.
