The Sri Lankan rupee replaced the Ceylonese rupee in 1972, following the country's name change from Ceylon to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka experienced a severe economic and currency crisis in 2022, with the rupee losing over 80% of its value before stabilising with IMF support.
