The Euro was introduced as an accounting currency in 1999 and physical notes and coins entered circulation on 1 January 2002, replacing 12 national currencies simultaneously. It is the second most traded currency in the world after the USD.

BGN is pegged to EUR at exactly 1.95583 since 1999, when Bulgaria adopted the Euro as the peg anchor following the DEM. Bulgaria is in the ERM II and is working toward full Euro adoption.
