The Bulgarian lev ('lion') was introduced in 1880. After severe financial crisis in 1997, Bulgaria introduced a currency board pegging the lev first to the Deutschmark and then to the Euro. Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007.
BGN is pegged to EUR at exactly 1.95583 since 1999, when Bulgaria adopted the Euro as the peg anchor following the DEM. Bulgaria is in the ERM II and is working toward full Euro adoption.
